Where to stay in Karaikudi
Hotel Meyyappaa is at 315/15, MAM Building, Sekkalai Road, Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu 630001. Sekkalai Road puts the hotel within the town rather than on its outskirts, close to the bus stand and the railway station, which matters if you are arriving by public transport and would rather not add another leg to the journey.
Every room is air-conditioned. Wi-Fi and parking are free, room service is available, and the front desk is staffed around the clock. Family rooms are available for larger groups.
- Free Wi-Fi

Getting there
Karaikudi is served by both rail and road, and the hotel sits near the bus stand and railway station. If you are arriving late, reception is open 24 hours, so a night arrival is not a problem. Your stay runs for 24 hours from the time you check in.
For travelling out to the Chettinad villages, reception can help arrange local cab assistance. Staff speak Tamil and English.
Arriving from Trichy, Madurai, Chennai or Coimbatore
Most guests reach Karaikudi from somewhere else, so it is worth knowing the usual routes before you book.
- From Trichy (Tiruchirappalli): Tiruchirappalli International Airport is one of the two nearest airports to Karaikudi, and Trichy is also a major rail junction. Most arrivals hire a cab at the airport or take a bus or train down.
- From Madurai: Madurai Airport and Madurai Junction are the other common entry point, with regular buses and trains to Karaikudi.
- From Chennai: a long journey, usually made overnight. There are direct trains to Karaikudi Junction and overnight buses, and reception is staffed 24 hours, so an early morning arrival is fine.
- From Coimbatore: also a long haul, by overnight bus or by rail, and some guests fly into Trichy or Madurai from Coimbatore instead and finish the trip by road.
We have not published road distances or journey times for these routes, because both depend heavily on the road you take and the time of day, and we would rather not quote a number we cannot stand behind. Call +91 99650 99656 before you travel and reception will give you the current picture, and can arrange a cab to meet you.
If you are travelling down from Chennai or Coimbatore, or flying into Trichy or Madurai for a Chettinad trip, Karaikudi is the practical base: it is the largest town in the Chettinad region and the mansion villages are all short drives from it, which is why most visitors stay here rather than in the villages themselves.

The Chettinad villages around Karaikudi
Karaikudi sits at the centre of the Chettinad village cluster, and most visitors use the town as their base for the surrounding mansion villages rather than staying in the villages themselves. The settlements people most often ask about are Kanadukathan, Kothamangalam, Pallathur, Kandanur, Sakkottai, Pudhuvayal, Ariyakudi, Kottaiyur, Vairavanpatti and Devakottai.
We have not published road distances for these, because the distance depends on the route you take and we would rather not quote a figure we cannot stand behind. Call +91 99650 99656 and reception will tell you the driving time to the ones you plan to visit, and can arrange a cab.
Business travel and work stays in Karaikudi
Not every visit to Karaikudi is a heritage trip. The town is home to Alagappa University and to CECRI, the CSIR Central Electrochemical Research Institute, and a good share of our guests are business travellers here for work at or around them.
We are a small hotel rather than a corporate one, so what makes it work for business travel is the plain things: reception is staffed 24 hours so a late train is not a problem, every room is air-conditioned, Wi-Fi and parking are free, and the stay runs for 24 hours from the time you check in rather than ending at a fixed check-out hour, which helps when a meeting overruns. Rooms range from a budget non-AC double through heritage rooms to a suite.
